The year got off to a great start, with 5 Hiku Hikers joining for the January 2024 one. This activity has been happening in the East Coast Resorts area (mostly) since March last year, when Silke led a Hiku Hike in collaboration with a yoga retreat including a journey through dance at Glengariff Lodge. Since then, she has offered the Hiku Hikes on a monthly basis - even giving one in France!
Hiku Hikes further afield this year, in Uitenhage and Cathcart, are being discussed collaboratively. Write your heart into place, capturing your experience on this guided, silent walk - listening in to the mystery of what is. NO WRITERLY EXPERIENCE is necessary for this activity, merely a wish to preserve your living self in a unique moment in space and time, by writing words down in response to your environment. The hike is ideal for travellers keeping a journal of their experiences. Watch my presentation explaining the Hiku Hikes on www.facebook.com/share/p/u17e3KTk3CiAEHrV/?mibextid=Nif5oz Depending on the weather, the 'Hiku Hike' takes place either on Sunrise-on-Sea beach or in dune forest above Kwelera. En route, I stop to read a poem, offering basic technical commentary. While walking, you compose your own poem or reflective piece of writing, based on your sense experience of the surroundings. You have a chance to draw together your jottings. Editorial tips and feedback are given at the end of the walk. Bring pen and paper (phones and ipads will work in the shadier parts), hats, warm gear if there is a breeze, water bottle, and small cushions or towels to sit on. You need to be sufficiently able-bodied to walk, slowly, up- and downhill. Cost: R250 p/p Scholars age 8+ R100 Duration: ca. 2.5 hours. Bookings: Reserve your place with a 50% deposit. What previous Hiku Hikers have said“I have participated in two of these creative and soul enriching Hiku Hikes with Silke. Not only did I manage to put a poem together with ease but felt very inspired by nature. Silke had a wonderful, gentle way of connecting me towards feeling inspired by these natural surroundings, and also, I felt relaxed and confident enough to tap into my creativity. A truly unique experience of which I highly recommend.” – Cher Goslett Strydom
"A suprisingly enlightening experience, obliging me to connect with self and nature. Both educational and therapeutic, one can totally benefit from this experience on a regular basis. I felt more at one with myself and nature after the session and look forward to many more. Thank you to Silke for this wonderful experience and for allowing me to just be myself through this process." – Jessica Rose Saunders, piano tuning and repairs “East Londoners, don’t miss this opportunity - Silke’s Hiku Hike is not quite a hike nor quite a hiku, but a playful name that matches the playful meandering mindful walking and noticing experience… Later Silke gently guided us to let the jumble of words that captured what we noticed as we walked, looked, listened, felt… into some structure and a range of prose or poetry emerged, from playful and light to deeply reflective truths of self or our world.” – Lia Field |
